TERRACE
HOUSE
Our
interest in vernacular form and culture is most evident in the
origins of this building. Grounded in the rudimentary structures
of the plains Indians this residence captures the essence of dwelling
as the four elements; earth, air, water, and fire drive the design.
Out of the earth swell the three strong horizontal forms of the
complex that are each focused on the exterior space with water
at its core. Forming a vertical axis to this monolith is a dynamic
timber tower that rises up to provide cover, light, and natural
ventilation for the communal living areas.
